In her exhibition “Goethe is back – im Spiegel des 21. Jahrhunderts” (Goethe is back – in the mirror of the 21st century), photographer Nicole Simon embarks on an extraordinary journey of discovery.
With her camera, she delves deep into the universe of poet and thinker Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, breathing new life into his legacy. The show not only presents important places from Goethe's life, but also expressive color portraits of the poet that blend seamlessly with his poetic works. The exhibition is complemented by portraits of well-known personalities from the arts, culture, and science who have a special connection to Goethe. “Goethe is back” highlights Simon's in-depth exploration of Goethe's multifaceted identity as an artist, naturalist, humanist, and cosmopolitan. By deliberately interweaving contemporary social issues with Goethe's literature, Simon opens up inspiring perspectives on the world.
A highlight of the exhibition is the impressive installation in the Thomas Mann Hall: a monumental, six-meter-high and wide portrait of Goethe entitled “Bewusstsein – Consciousness” stands at the center of an impressive room installation.
